The DuoGen combined water/wind generator produces enough electricity to run most, if not all, of your on-board equipment

FACT: Towing a water impeller as you sail is the most efficient and effective way to recharge your yacht's batteries.

FACT: DuoGen in water mode produces a steady 8 amps at 6 knots, 11 amps at 7 knots, 16 amps at 8 knots.

FACT: DuoGen is easy to deploy, trouble free to run, non-intrusive, simple to recover.

The well-equipped cruising yacht incorporates an increasing range of electrical and electronic equipment designed to make cruising on board simpler, safer and more enjoyable.

Welcome as these innovations are, they impose increasing demands for electricity on the ship's batteries. A modern cruising yacht may well be operating auto pilot, radar, as well as marine radio, computerized plotting, pressurized water and navigation lights. None of this equipment is of any use if the ship's batteries are flat.

DuoGen in water mode produces more power to help run your on-board electrical and electronic equipment as you sail, without the worry of flat batteries.

Ideal Renewable Energy Device
As committed yachtsmen, we at DuoGen are well aware of this problem, and sought to address it by considering what constituted the ideal renewable energy device for use aboard a yacht. Based on extensive discussions with experienced yachtsmen, a product specification was drawn up and used as the basis of a development program which has led in time to the production of the DuoGen machine.

Many existing systems, promise large electrical outputs in very high wind speeds. This is of limited use to most yachtsmen who generally avoid high wind speeds, and do most of their sailing in more benign Beaufort numbers. This is when most power is actually consumed aboard a yacht and, by definition, when most power is required to replace it.

Maximize Generation While Cruising
All yachtsmen, however, already own a large wind machine, and that is the yacht herself. Whereas a normal micro turbine, suitable for mounting on a yacht, may intercept 7 - 10 square feet of air stream, the sails of a typical cruising yacht will intercept many times that figure. For this reason, the way to maximize generation whilst cruising is by drawing energy from the yacht's motion through the water rather than directly from the wind.

This fact has not been entirely lost on the marine industry and several wind/water combinations are available They tend to be adaptations of single purpose machines and are characterized by being problematic to deploy and recover, and time-consuming to switch from one mode to another.

Why dual mode?
Dual mode means that the same machine operates as a wind generator and a water-powered generator.

The DuoGen product has been six years in development, and this has lead to a machine that is absolutely unique in configuration. We believe that it represents a major step forward in water/wind generation.

Purpose Designed
DuoGen is purpose designed to provide a truly practical solution to battery charging on cruising yachts. Most of the system's weight is at deck level, and mode change is accomplished in seconds without the use of tools. Redundant system components, i.e. the air turbine in water mode and water turbine in air mode, are designed to disassemble or are very compact, so stowage is no problem whatsoever.

Both modes are easily deployed and recovered within seconds without the need to demount and reposition the alternator, electrical connections or major system elements. The dual mode capability provides for greater energy conversion potential than is possible with any stand-alone system and energy production is maximized when you need it most, that is, when you are using your boat and consuming energy.

Designed To Be Quiet
Many yachtsmen who have experience of wind turbines mounted on cruising yachts complain that that they produce noise and vibration which resonates through the cabin making life aboard unpleasant. The DuoGen is designed to be quiet. It is absolutely silent in water mode, and no noise or vibration is discernible in the yacht's accommodation whilst in wind mode.

Safe To Operate
DuoGen is safe to operate and incorporates a handle which enables the wind mode to be safely stopped in any wind conditions. With its 1.1 metre diameter air rotor, DuoGen is sensibly sized for the average cruising yacht, and each unit is supplied complete. In many cases, installation should be possible without any alteration or additional mounting hardware. DuoGen is superbly engineered and aesthetically elegant. Built from the highest quality marine grade materials throughout, it is designed to deliver years of trouble free service.

Power from the water
Under way, DuoGen's water mode is deployed. Due to the physics of power generation, far more energy will be produced in moderate wind speeds through the deployment of the water mode than would be obtained from an air turbine alone. The DuoGen system has been designed so that, in most conditions, it is more than capable of carrying all the electrical loads of the average cruising yacht on passage. Because the unit is so readily and easily deployed and recovered, this becomes a practical proposition whether you're contemplating a jaunt across the bay or a trans-Atlantic crossing.

No Resurfacing
DuoGen's water mode uses no tow rope or heavy impeller. The water impeller on its mounting bracket is fitted to DuoGen's yaw arm and is prevented from resurfacing by an adjustable diving plane . Its running depth is always less than the vessel's keel and rudder, and it is therefore virtually immune from damage. The DuoGen water mode operates in a controlled fashion within the top 500mm of the water. This, coupled with the advanced design of the three-bladed impeller, ensures that drag is minimized. Outputs in water mode are impressive, rising rapidly with increasing speed. At 6 knots a steady 8 amps is produced, rising to 11 amps at 7 knots. Because DuoGen does not rely on tow ropes and heavy impellers, the water mode begins to charge batteries in water speeds of under 2 knots, offering the opportunity to produce tidal power if the yacht is anchored or on a swinging mooring in a sufficiently strong tidal stream.

No Fouling The Propeller
The adjustable diving plane ensures that the turbine remains fully immersed at all speeds and at all but the most extreme angles of heel. The yacht remains maneuverable at all times and there is no risk of the ship's propeller being fouled by trailing towlines.

DuoGen's water mode stays within the same wave as the yacht and is completely silent in operation. A unique weatherized transmission element maintains the impeller normal to the water flow for maximum hydro-dynamic efficiency. Up to 3 guard lines can be easily rigged to prevent the clogging of the impeller by floating debris.
Recovered Quickly and Easily  The DuoGen is mounted near its balance point, so that on returning to harbor it is child's play to recover the water mode to a vertical position. It is then the work of moments to lower the yaw arm and remove the water impeller. DuoGen is re-secured to its upper mount bracket, and the air turbine re-installed. The yaw arm is returned to its full height and straight away, your DuoGen is operating in air mode. Having persuaded you of the power and efficiency of generating by towing an impeller, we have to admit that there is a price to pay in terms of drag. However, amp for amp, DuoGen causes 30% less drag than alternative towed generators
